Today I'll give a short introduction to the air conditioners.
Usually air conditioners include the compressor(condenser) and the evaporator. The two parts are packaged together, that is, packaged air conditioner. Usually you could find the packaged air conditioners on the roof. Split system air conditioners are more common. The compressor is installed in an outdoor unit while the evaporator is installed indoors. Therefore, the split system cools or heats the room quietly.

Next one, portable air conditioner. As your thought, it is portable and widely used in a small place. It is very convenient and economical, especially for an apartment building.However, it is a little noisy. Anyway, if you don't have much money, this one may be the best choice for you.

The last one, ductless air conditioner. It is different from the central air conditioner for its "ductless". It is separated into two parts, outdoors and indoors, just like the split system air conditioner. But the two are not connected with the duct, just with smaller conduits.
